Midjourney for AI Art: Complete Beginner’s Guide
I created my first AI artwork with Midjourney six months ago. It was terrible. Now I sell AI-generated art on Etsy, create book covers, and design album artwork. The learning curve was steep but worth it.
This guide covers everything I wish someone had told me when I started.
What Is Midjourney?
Midjourney is an AI image generation tool accessed through Discord. You type text prompts in a Discord channel, and Midjourney generates four image variations. You pick your favorite, refine it, and repeat until you get exactly what you want.
Unlike DALL-E 3 (which works in ChatGPT), Midjourney requires Discord. This feels weird at first, but you get used to it quickly.
Pricing:
-
Basic: $10/month (200 images)
-
Standard: $30/month (unlimited relaxed images)
-
Pro: $60/month (unlimited + commercial features)
-
Mega: $120/month (maximum capacity)
I use Standard. For most creators, this is the sweet spot.
Getting Started: Step-by-Step Setup
Let me walk you through the exact setup process.
Step 1: Create a Discord Account
Go to discord.com and sign up. It’s free. Download the Discord app (desktop or mobile).
Step 2: Join Midjourney
Go to midjourney.com and click “Join the Beta.” This adds Midjourney to your Discord.
Step 3: Subscribe
In Discord, type /subscribe in any Midjourney channel. Choose your plan. I recommend Standard ($30/month) for serious use.
Step 4: Generate Your First Image
Type /imagine prompt: a sunset over mountains in a Midjourney channel. Wait 30-60 seconds. Four images appear.
Step 5: Upscale or Vary
Click U1-U4 to upscale a specific image. Click V1-V4 to create variations of a specific image.
That’s it. You’re now creating AI art.
Understanding Midjourney Parameters
Parameters are commands you add to your prompt to control the output. These are essential for good results.
Aspect Ratio (–ar)
Controls image dimensions:
-
--ar 16:9for widescreen (YouTube, presentations) -
--ar 4:5for Instagram portraits -
--ar 1:1for square (default) -
--ar 9:16for TikTok/Stories
Example: /imagine prompt: landscape photography --ar 16:9
Quality (–q)
Controls rendering quality:
-
--q 0.5faster, lower quality -
--q 1default quality -
--q 2higher quality (uses more GPU time)
Example: /imagine prompt: detailed portrait --q 2
Stylize (–s)
Controls how artistic vs. literal:
-
--s 0very literal to prompt -
--s 100default -
--s 750maximum artistic interpretation
Example: /imagine prompt: abstract art --s 500
Chaos (–c)
Controls variation between the four images:
-
--c 0very similar variations -
--c 50default -
--c 100maximum variation
Example: /imagine prompt: creative concept --c 75
Seed (–seed)
For reproducible results:
-
--seed 1234uses specific seed number -
Same seed + same prompt = similar results
Example: /imagine prompt: character design --seed 42
Model Version (–v)
Selects which Midjourney model:
-
--v 6.0current version (as of early 2026) -
--v 5.2previous version (sometimes better for specific styles)
Example: /imagine prompt: photorealistic portrait --v 6.0
Writing Effective Prompts
This is where most beginners struggle. Let me show you what works.
Basic Prompt Structure:
[Subject] + [Details] + [Style] + [Lighting] + [Composition] + [Parameters]
Bad Prompt:
/imagine prompt: a dog
Good Prompt:
/imagine prompt: golden retriever puppy sitting on grass, sunny day, professional photography, shallow depth of field, warm natural lighting --ar 4:5 --q 2
See the difference? Specificity matters.
My Prompt Template:
/imagine prompt: [main subject], [specific details], [art style or medium], [lighting type], [color palette], [composition notes] --ar [ratio] --s [stylize] --v 6.0
Real Examples That Work:
For book covers:
/imagine prompt: mysterious forest path, foggy morning, dark fantasy art style, muted greens and grays, dramatic lighting, book cover composition --ar 2:3 --s 300
For album artwork:
/imagine prompt: abstract geometric shapes, vibrant neon colors, synthwave aesthetic, glowing effects, dynamic composition --ar 1:1 --s 600
For product mockups:
/imagine prompt: minimalist product photography, white background, soft shadows, professional studio lighting, clean composition --ar 4:5 --q 2
For social media:
/imagine prompt: inspirational quote background, soft gradient, pastel colors, minimalist design, space for text --ar 4:5
Advanced Techniques
After generating 1,000+ images, here are my advanced tips.
Technique 1: Image Prompts
You can use existing images as part of your prompt. Upload an image to Discord, copy its URL, and include it in your prompt.
/imagine prompt: [image URL] make this more vibrant and add sunset lighting
This is powerful for iterating on existing concepts.
Technique 2: Character Consistency
Creating consistent characters across multiple images is hard but possible:
-
Generate your base character
-
Note the seed number
-
Use same seed + similar prompts for new images
-
Use
--cref(character reference) with the character image URL
Example:
/imagine prompt: character running --cref [character URL] --cw 100
Technique 3: Style Reference
Reference specific artistic styles:
/imagine prompt: portrait --sref [style image URL]
This applies the referenced style to your new image.
Technique 4: Blending Images
Use /blend to combine 2-5 images:
/blend then upload 2-5 images. Midjourney creates a hybrid.
Great for mood boards and concept exploration.
Technique 5: Zoom and Pan
After upscaling an image, use Zoom Out or Pan to expand the composition:
-
Zoom Out 2x: Shows more context around the image
-
Pan Left/Right/Up/Down: Extends the image in that direction
Perfect for creating wider scenes or adjusting composition.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
Mistake 1: Too Vague
Prompt: “beautiful landscape”
Fix: “mountain lake at sunrise, mirror reflection, pine trees, golden hour lighting, professional landscape photography –ar 16:9”
Mistake 2: Too Many Elements
Prompt: “castle with dragons and knights and horses and fire and swords and…”
Fix: Focus on 2-3 main elements. “medieval castle on cliff, single dragon flying overhead, dramatic storm clouds –ar 16:9”
Mistake 3: Ignoring Lighting
Prompt: “portrait of a woman”
Fix: “portrait of a woman, soft window lighting, Rembrandt lighting technique, warm tones –ar 4:5”
Mistake 4: Wrong Aspect Ratio
Creating Instagram posts with square images when portraits perform better.
Fix: Always use --ar 4:5 for Instagram posts.
Mistake 5: Not Iterating
Accepting first results.
Fix: Generate, pick best, create variations (V1-V4), upscale, refine. Expect 3-5 iterations for final image.

Commercial Use and Legal Considerations
Let’s address the important stuff.
Ownership: If you’re a paid subscriber, you own the images you create. You can sell them, use them commercially, whatever you want. Free trial users have different terms.
Copyright: The legal landscape is evolving. Currently, AI-generated images can’t be copyrighted in the US (no human author). However, you can still sell and use them commercially.
Disclosure: I disclose AI use when it matters. For art sales, I’m transparent: “AI-generated artwork.” For blog images, I don’t always disclose—it’s not materially relevant.
Trademarks: Don’t generate images with trademarked characters (Mickey Mouse, Marvel heroes, etc.). Midjourney tries to block these, but don’t try to circumvent it.
Ethics: Be thoughtful about what you create. Don’t generate misleading content, deepfakes, or harmful imagery. Use this tool responsibly.
Midjourney vs. Competitors
Midjourney vs. DALL-E 3:
-
Midjourney: More artistic control, better for art
-
DALL-E 3: Easier to use, better for literal prompts
-
My take: Midjourney for art, DALL-E 3 for practical images
Midjourney vs. Stable Diffusion:
-
Midjourney: Easier, more polished, requires Discord
-
Stable Diffusion: More control, runs locally, steeper learning curve
-
My take: Midjourney for most users, Stable Diffusion for advanced users
Midjourney vs. Adobe Firefly:
-
Midjourney: Better quality, more creative
-
Firefly: Commercial-safe, integrated with Adobe tools
-
My take: Midjourney for creativity, Firefly for enterprise use
